A Florida man was accused of pointing a laser at a sheriff’s office helicopter while sheriffs responded to fires after Hurricane Ian, officials said.
His 44-year-old Nick Davidson of Nokomis was arrested Tuesday and charged with pointing a laser beam at the driver or pilot, according to online booking records for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
The helicopter was assisting crews in the area who were responding to the fire around 9 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
WWSB-TV reported that at 45 a.m. EDT, a green laser beam was aimed at the pilot.
According to WPLG-TV, the area is under a state of emergency due to Hurricane Ian, and lawmakers are helping with damage assessments and keeping troops away from potential hazards in Midwest Florida.
“There is never an appropriate time to shine a laser at a helicopter but doing so under a declared state of emergency is just in bad taste,” the sheriff’s office tweeted.
